A Guide to Inclusive Summer Fun Through Jackson County Parks and Rec

Summer brings more than just warm weather, it brings opportunity. Opportunity to play, explore, connect and thrive. For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), that opportunity is often shaped by the systems and services available around them. At eitas, we help navigate those systems and close the gap between what's possible and what’s accessible. That’s why we’re shining a light on Jackson County Parks and Rec, whose Special Population Services are setting the bar for inclusive summer activities in Jackson County.

“Sand Cinema at Longview Lake Beach is the most fun event of the summer!” said Terri McMillan, Special Population Services Administrator at Jackson County Parks + Rec. “It’s a great way for families to enjoy movies on the beach—with Moana on June 6th, Mufasa on July 11th, and Inside Out 2 on August 1st. Gates open at 7:30 PM, admission is just $10 per car, and we encourage everyone to bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy concessions!”

This summer, if you’re looking for ways your loved one or someone you support can get involved, make new friends and build meaningful experiences, Jackson County Parks and Rec offers more than just recreation—it offers a pathway to connection, joy and empowerment.

Experiences Designed with Inclusion in Mind

Jackson County Parks and Rec’s Special Population Services are a prime example of what it means to innovate for inclusion. This initiative creates space where everyone, regardless of ability, belongs. It’s not about fitting people into programs; it’s about designing programs around people. Through thoughtfully adapted activities like social events, movie nights, dances, day trips and activities, participants are invited to explore the fullness of summer in a way that meets their needs and respects their strengths.

“As seasoned associates, we’ve built lasting relationships over the years—people know us, and we know them,” said Terri McMillan. “Unlike some ISL and residential facilities that see more turnover, we’ve had the opportunity to truly connect with individuals, their families and guardians. With over 50 years of service, our mission has always been to support and encourage all individuals to go after their dreams.”

Whether it’s a night of laughter with friends or a weekend adventure, every event is built on the belief that real lives deserve real experiences.

Healthy Competition

If you think summer means sports, Jackson County Parks and Rec has something for everyone. Their Sports Programs provide opportunities to build physical fitness, develop good sportsmanship and connect with others in the community.

Offered year-round for participants 18 and older, the programs include both individual and team sports, with training available in areas such as athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, skiing, snowshoeing, softball, tennis, and walking. Whether you're looking to compete locally or aim for regional, state or even international events, there are opportunities at every level.

It’s about more than just the game—it’s about belonging, growing and winning together.

Summer Day Trips and Activities

Summer should be a season of discovery and Jackson County Parks and Rec ensures that’s possible with day trips and activities tailored for individuals with I/DD. These experiences allow participants to explore new places with confidence. Whether it’s a visit to a museum, a nature hike or scrapbooking with new friends, these excursions help participants build independence, develop social skills and, above all, have fun. It’s another step toward the kind of integrated life every person deserves, where travel isn’t a barrier, but a bridge.

Social Events

Friendship doesn’t follow a schedule—but Jackson County Parks and Rec makes sure there’s always room for connection. Through regularly hosted dances, game nights and movie gatherings, they foster the kind of relationships that last long after summer ends. These events are about inclusion at its simplest: creating safe, supportive spaces where people with I/DD can be themselves, express themselves and enjoy being together. It’s a reminder that every community is stronger when everyone has a place in it.

A Model of Community Partnership

At eitas, we believe real change happens when systems, services and people work together. Jackson County Parks and Rec isn’t doing this work alone—they’re part of a larger network of organizations dedicated to making sure that inclusive summer activities in Jackson County aren’t the exception, but the expectation.

If you’re navigating life with I/DD—as a parent, a provider or a community member—know that you don’t have to do it alone. Jackson County Parks and Rec is one of many organizations working to make sure summer experiences for individuals with I/DD are joyful, empowering and accessible.
