Eitas currently has a full-time opening for a Spare Driver to provide para-transit service throughout Jackson County in a safe and efficient manner.  In addition, the Spare Driver is responsible for providing relief to other route drivers during staffing shortages, emergencies, and other instances as needed.  This is a year-round position with our Division of Transportation, which requires drivers who can responsibly operate a multi-passenger bus in all temperatures and road conditions.  Work includes interacting with our clients, their families, and service providers throughout the community; riding along with other drivers in order to learn routes; clerical and other support work in the DOT office; and maintaining effective communication with the Transportation Manager and the Bus Manager.

 
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Learn all DOT routes through a rotation system that allows you to accompany the driver en route.

  • Transport passengers in the designated vehicle in a safe manner and adhere closely to the established schedule.

  • Provide route coverage for staffing shortages as needed.

  • Operate the designated vehicle in a safe, reasonable, and prudent manner and in accordance with all state and local laws, ordinances, and rules, at all times.

  • Completion of the following paperwork:

  •  Daily attendance sheets (turn in weekly on Fridays)

  • Vehicle Safety Inspection and Information forms (turn in weekly on Friday evenings)

  • Assist passengers on and off the vehicle when necessary; drivers should stand outside vehicle at facilities to assist passengers.

Experience and Training Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement

  • Experience driving passenger vehicles, 1 year required (2 years preferred)

  • Criminal record without convictions or charges that might endanger the safety of our passengers

  • Good driving record

  • Knowledge of the Kansas City metropolitan area

  • Federal medical certification


Skills Required:

  • Ability to provide customer service and handle a variety of people and situations in a positive manner

  • Ability to show care and sensitivity to the special needs of our clients

  • Basic reading, writing, grammar and math skills usually attained through a high school education or equivalent

  • Working knowledge of the behaviors and medical concerns of developmental disabilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, management and the public

  • Ability to follow directions, follow route guides, and travel into various areas of Jackson County

  • Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to drive a multi-passenger bus/modified van, assist clients on and off the vehicle, and secure them in their seats

  • Intermediate level decision making skills to adhere to safety rules and maintain order during transit

Working Conditions:
 
The Spare Driver works a split shift, with an early morning shift, a mid-day break of approximately 3 hours, and an afternoon shift.  Work hours may vary per route, but may span from 5 A.M. to 5 P.M.  The Spare Driver frequently climbs to enter and exit the bus, sits, stands, bends, squats and moves intermittently during working hours.  Will push, pull and move wheelchairs in excess of 50 pounds.  Will use manual dexterity to manipulate levers, tie-down straps and seatbelts, and complete required paperwork.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors, and the driver is exposed to various temperatures and road conditions.  Regular attendance is required.
