Exceptionalities at Work
Helping people build skills, explore work and connect with their community
At Exceptional Humans, a person’s interests, strengths and experiences are the starting point for learning and opportunity.
Kelly Cogan describes herself as an educator at heart. It shows in the way she talks about employment, creativity and community. She sees support as an opportunity to listen, teach and help people build connections that matter to them.
That belief helped shape the name Exceptional Humans. Kelly uses the word exceptionalities to recognize the qualities and differences that make each person distinct.
The organization calls the people it supports Scholars, reflecting its focus on learning, growth and making choices about the future.
Small Businesses and Meaningful Possibilities
Kelly has worked with eitas since 2022. Today, the Exceptional Humans microenterprise program includes six Scholars who are exploring what it takes to build and operate a small business.
Their ventures reflect a range of interests, including piñatas, photography, jewelry, visual art and books.
Scholars practice developing products, making items, setting prices, presenting their work and talking with customers. Upcoming markets will give them opportunities to sell what they create and build relationships in the community.
Each part of the process offers something to learn. Explaining a product can strengthen communication. Responding to a customer’s request can build problem solving skills. Making a sale can open possibilities for earning income through work that reflects a person’s interests.
Community Is Part of the Classroom
“We focus on communities and community events,” Kelly said.
Markets give Scholars opportunities to answer questions, receive feedback and meet people who may become customers or professional connections. The learning happens through those conversations and experiences.
That approach carries into other Exceptional Humans programs.
Community Connections builds participation around each Scholar’s interests and life goals. Teaching Empowered Communication brings together communication, community awareness and vocational learning through podcasts, videography and presentations.
Across these programs, Scholars have opportunities to practice skills, express their ideas and take an active role in their communities.
Employment Support Built Around the Person
Exceptional Humans also supports career exploration, individualized employment goals, job development, coaching and job retention.
The goal is competitive pay in inclusive community workplaces, with support shaped around the person and the job.
Microenterprise offers another way to explore employment. For one Scholar, progress may mean completing a sale. For another, it may mean explaining a product, trying a new task or sharing an idea with a customer for the first time.
Each person’s strengths, interests and goals help guide the next step.
Celebrating Kayvon’s Achievement
The Exceptional Humans community also had a personal achievement to celebrate this September.
Kayvon, who is connected with Exceptional Humans, received the 2026 eitas Personal Achievement Award. Following the ceremony, the Exceptional Humans team shared its pride in him, celebrating his work at AC Hotels by Marriott and the kindness he shows his friends.
“It’s truly a privilege to be part of your life,” the organization wrote in its congratulatory message.
Their words offer a glimpse of the relationship behind the recognition. The team knows Kayvon through his work and the friendships that are part of his life, and they were proud to celebrate this milestone with him.
Kayvon’s achievement brings another perspective to this provider spotlight: the accomplishments people build in community workplaces and the relationships that grow alongside them.
Why eitas Highlights Funded Providers
Eitas invests in local providers because each brings expertise, relationships and opportunities to people with developmental disabilities in Jackson County.
Exceptional Humans brings an educator’s perspective to employment and community participation. Its programs connect learning with practical experience while keeping each person’s interests and choices at the center.
For Scholars, that can mean developing a business idea, practicing a presentation, exploring a career or building confidence in a community setting. For families and community members, it creates opportunities to participate, encourage and get to know the people behind the work.
Creating Opportunities Together
A piñata, photograph, piece of jewelry or community presentation carries the work of the person who created it. Behind it are decisions, practice, skills and a willingness to share something with others.
Those experiences grow through the efforts of Scholars, families, educators, employers and community members.
Kelly’s words capture the belief behind that work:
“How amazing to have uniqueness in life.”
At Exceptional Humans, that uniqueness helps shape what a person learns, creates and chooses next.
