What is a Universal Changing table?
It is a large, powered, height-adjustable changing surface designed to support teens and adults with disabilities or complex mobility needs.
Accessibility is about more than getting through the door. It is about being able to stay, participate and enjoy the experience with dignity.
A day out with family should not depend on whether a safe place is available for personal care. Yet many children, teens and adults with disabilities cannot use an infant changing station. Without another option, families may have to leave early or make difficult choices that do not protect privacy, safety or hygiene.
To help close that gap, eitas funded two new universal changing tables at Union Station Kansas City. The tables provide a safer, more private option for people who need support with personal care, including those who have outgrown an infant changing station.
A Practical Investment in Belonging
One of the changing tables is located inside the newly opened restroom and family amenity space at Science City.
Access to a suitable changing space supports dignity, hygiene and the freedom to stay longer, learn, explore and enjoy time together in the community.
Union Station officially unveiled the new Science City space on Aug. 25, 2026. The nearly $1 million project created 2,270 square feet of new guest amenities and expanded restroom capacity while adding features centered on accessibility, inclusion and the needs of families.
The new space includes:
A family room for visitors who need more privacy or space
A mother’s room for feeding, pumping and caring for a baby
A universal changing table funded by eitas
A dedicated sensory room that provides a calm, quiet place away from the activity of the science center
NorthPoint Foundation and Jackson County supported the sensory room.
The new area also carries Science City’s learning mission into an unexpected place with water themed exhibits, interactive design and features created for children.
Access Throughout the Visit
The new rooms are part of a broader effort to make Union Station and Science City more welcoming. Current visitor information also identifies several accessibility supports:

Sensory backpacks available for checkout with a weighted blanket, sunglasses, noise canceling headphones and fidget tools
Select Sensory Sunday events with reduced sound, minimal lighting effects, sensory friendly activities and designated quiet areas
Assisted listening devices available upon request in Union Station theaters
ADA parking in the South Plaza parking lot and parking garage
Wheelchair and stroller drop off locations at the front entrance and west circle drive
Building maps that identify restrooms and elevators on the public levels
Union Station’s current amenities information says wheelchairs are not available for checkout. Guests with accessibility questions can call 816.460.2000 before visiting.

The ribbon cutting brought together people who share a commitment to creating a more inclusive community.
